Class Notes 3/28

Today the students took their chapter 9 quiz.

There will be no homework while you are away. Enjoy your trip to DC.

Class Notes 3/24

Today in class we covered section 9-6, which talked about the discriminant. We learned today that the value of the discriminant can tell us a lot about the solutions of our quadratic. If the discriminant is positive then we have two solutions, if it is zero then we have one solution and if the discriminant is negative we have no real solutions.

We then worked with our partners practicing our understanding of discriminant.

Homework due Tuesday 3/28: Study for the Chapter 9 quiz.

Class Notes 3/22

Today in class we covered section 9.5 of our book, which covered the quadratic formula. What we learned today was that the roots of any quadratic equation can be found by using the quadratic formula. After going through a few examples together the class worked in their groups on a few problems.

Homework due Friday 3/24: Handout #13-17. Pg. 537 #77, 79, and 80.

There will be a quiz on Chapter 9 on Tuesday 3/28.

Class Notes 3/20

Today in class we covered section 9-4. In this section we started to learn how to solve (find the roots/points in which the graph crosses the x-axis) quadratic equations by graphing and then checking algebraically and vice versa.

We then worked in our groups for a while getting some practice from the unit.

Homework due 3/22: Pg. 529-530 #21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42

Class Notes 3/16

Today in class we dedicated our time to graphing quadratic equations by hand. While this method proved to be tedious it is extremely important to understand how to find the vertex of a quadratic equation along with finding points on both sides of the equations. Without this understanding it is really difficult to understand how quadratics act when the numbers in the equations change.

Homework due Monday 3/20: Pg. 522 #44, 47, 50, 53, 56, 59, 62, 65, 66.

Class Notes 3/9

Today in class the students worked with their groups on a packet investigating quadratic equations and how they act graphically when the values of a, b, and c are either positive or negative.

Homework due Tuesday 3/14: Finish in class packet.

Class Notes 3/7

Today in class we took our quiz on simplifying radicals and then moved onto our coverage of section 9.3 which covered how to graph quadratic equations.

We learned the steps needed in order to graph a quadratic equation.

Homework due Thursday 3/9: Finish the front page of the graphing quadratic equations handout.

Class Notes 3/3

Today in class we worked more on simplifying radicals. We worked with our groups on a handout and got more practice at trying to simplify radicals. We also worked on how to simplify radicals that have variables under them.

Homework: Study for Tuesday's quiz covering (9-1 and 9-2).

Class Notes 3/1

Today in class we worked more on solving square root equations. After we worked on some of these problems we moved onto the next section of the book which showed us how to simplify radicals. We worked on the concept of trying to find perfect squares underneath the radical and looking to find matching radicals in a quotient so that they will cancel out.

There will be a quiz next Tuesday covering the material we have covered in Chapter 9.

Homework due Friday 3/3: Pg. 514 #34-45
