Class Notes 12/14

Today in class we covered section 6-5 of our book (graphing Inequalities in x and y).

We went over class notes, then the class worked in groups on a worksheet. After we worked on our worksheets, we learned how to use our calculators to graph linear equations and inequalities.

We then went over our Chapter 5 Tests.

Today in class we finished our coverage of the point-slope form of an equation and then moved onto our work with the Standard Form (Ax + By = C). We worked with our partners on some examples.

Class Notes 12/2

Today in class we went over section 5-3 and 5-5. Both sections dealt with writing equations of lines using two points. We learned how to use slope intercept form and point-slope form when given two points to find the equation of the line.

Today was grandparents and special friends day so we played math games. We did some fractions games and then played everyone's favorite MPH.

Class Notes 11/8

Today in class we finished our discussion on section 4-6 and started our work on 4-7. Due to grandparents day on Thursday the students were given filled out copies of the class notes for 4-7 and 4-8. Along with the filled out class notes a study guide was handed out to the class.

We are still having our test on Tuesday 11/15, therefore the students should be responsible for the two sections given out in class. If you have questions on anything let me know and don't wait until the last minute.

Class Notes 10/31

Today in class we continued our coverage with graphing. Today we went over how you can find the x and y intercepts in order to plot two points and then graph. We also saw some real life examples. One example dealt with a school play and the prices to charge a child and adult and what the graph means in context of the question. That briefly led to a discussion on inequalities which we will cover next unit.

After the lesson the students got some practice finding intercepts and graphing based of the those results.

Today in class we started our coverage of Chapter 4. We went over scatter plots and how to plot points on an xy coordinate plane. We also covered section 4-2, which was how to graph linear equations and what the graph of an equation represents (all the solutions to an equation).

Class Notes 10/13

Today in class we started our coverage on Functions and Formulas. We will be dealing with equations involving more than one variable. This unit is meant to help us recognize ways in which to work with functions and formulas.

We learned about the difference between and input and output. We also learned that what it means when we say something like "x as a function of y" (this means that the value of x depends on the value of y).

We went over examples of formulas like area, and the conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Class Notes 10/6

Today in class the students worked individually on solving word problems and trying to create linear equations from the information in the problem. Along with solving the process I asked the students to write down their process as they attempted the problem. What thoughts did they have as they started the problem. Did they try something and then have to change their strategy. Things of that nature. We are going to gets lots of practice this year writing and talking about math and not just solving problems.

Homework due Thursday 10/13: PG 164 #22-26. You are to write out paragraphs explaining your process for problems 22-26.

Today in class we worked on section 3.5 which is translating word problems into algebraic equations. In class we looked at three different examples and how we can use graphs, charts or drawings to help check our answers.

After the lesson the class worked in groups trying to solve word problems.

Today in class we covered started our work on section 3.4, which dealt with solving linear equations with variables on both sides of the equation. We learned some strategies to help make solving these problems easier.

Today the students took their quiz on the quadratic formula and the discriminant.

Because the 8th graders were still out the rest of the class period was given as some down time to the 7th graders who have been working extremely hard the past few weeks.

Homework: Read sections 10.1 and 10.2 and list three things overall from the two sections that you took away from the reading.

Today in class we covered section 9.6, which covered the Discriminant. When finding the value of the discriminant we learn a few things about our quadratic equation, for instance we find the value of the discriminant we know how many solutions our quadratic equation will have.

Class Notes 2/29

Today in class we covered section 7.5 which showed us that when solving a system of linear equations we can have three types of answers. We can have exactly one solution (intersecting lines), no solution (parallel lines), and many solutions (the two lines are the same).

After the notes we went over questions from the book pages 414 #31-35 and 429 #6-11, 30.

Homework due 3/2: page 415 #34,35 and page 429 #18,19,20.

Also one note, there will be a short quiz on Friday on what we have covered in Chapter 7.

Class Notes 2/23

Today was a big day in Algebra AC. We covered three sections (7.1-7.3) where we started to learn how to solve systems on linear equations. These three sections taught us how to find the solutions to two different equations in two variables. We looked at graphs and found the intersection points and then we use the substitution method and the linear combination method in order to find the solution.

Homework due 2/25: Handout #5-8 on page 2, and then #2, 3, 5, 8 on the third page.
